The Franklin Pierce School District had the honor of hosting a Civic Mobilization Day on Good Citizenship Day at Washington High School with GATES High School seniors in attendance.

The event was planned by the Civic Learning Initiative of the Council on Public Legal Education as part of the local civic learning partnerships launched in 2018. Recruited by the Initiative leads, Adam Williamson, Franklin Pierce’s Secondary Literacy Curriculum Specialist, Franklin Pierce School District Lance Goodpaster, Deputy Secretary of State Sherie Nelson, Pierce County Auditor Julie Anderson, State Representative Melanie Morgan by telecast, Civic Learning Partnership Lead Kate McPherson, Pierce County Volunteer Center Director Allison Loft, Secretary of State Voter Education & Outreach Specialist Katrina Osborn each brought a particular perspective on how to be civically involved with their local community and nationally.

However, by far, the most inspiring part of the event was when several of our students stood on stage in front of over one-hundred of their peers to discuss and celebrate their civic contribution to community. These stories and descriptions provided the audience with examples of the significance and impact of their civic involvement. Each student spoke with passion and commitment and each received thundering applause from their peers. Students then were provided voter registration forms and Pledge to Act forms to make a commitment to take some specific action to engage civically with their community by a specific date. The students left the theater with high energy as they took buttons and stickers from the Secretary of State’s office, declaring such messages as “I only date voters!”
