Franklin Pierce Schools are enriched by the growing diversity of our students. Students are enrolled from many countries worldwide. Spanish, Russian, Korean, Moldavian, Tagalog, Arabic, Cambodian, Ukrainian, Chinese, Khmer, Vietnamese and Hindi are some of the languages spoken in our district.
Our overall goal is to support the academic progress of the English Language Learner throughout the educational process. The primary focus is to be able to use English to achieve academically in all content areas. We strive to ensure the student will graduate with the qualifications and ability to choose the many options available to become successful in our communities.
Our programs work together with agencies to support both the students and families. Amongst these efforts are Adult ESL classes, offered in conjunction with Pierce College and a partnership with LEAP(Latino /a Educational Achievement Project) at the secondary level .
*All staff throughout the district are highly trained and dedicated to ensuring ELL qualified students gain English proficiency. ELL programs are housed at each of our elementary and secondary schools.
*Services are integrated and aligned with general education programs. Language instruction is content-based. Sheltered and content-based models of instruction are researched based. Students acquire language by utilizing the academic content as the vehicle for developing language, content, cognitive and study skills. Pull out is also used for the Newcomer and lower levels concentrating on English Language Development. Instruction is guided by the English Language Proficiency Standards in alignment with the Washington State Learning Standards.
