Dual Language Immersion program coming to Harvard Elementary
Posted on 03/31/2017
Hello Hola on Chalk BoardStarting in the 2017-2018 school year, Franklin Pierce School District will be offering a Spanish Dual Language Immersion program at Harvard Elementary. This learning option is committed to student growth towards bilingualism and literacy from kindergarten through fifth grade with the ultimate goal being Spanish and English language proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking within all academic content areas. During the 2017-2018 school year, Spanish Dual Language Immersion will be offered to kindergarten students only. An additional grade level will be added each school year.

At kindergarten and first grade, approximately 90% of instruction will be in Spanish and 10% will be in English to facilitate early Spanish language acquisition and literacy development. As students transition to higher grades, more of the instruction shifts to English so that in the upper grades there will be an equal division of (50/50) of Spanish and English instruction.

Acceptance into our Spanish Dual Language Immersion program will be through an application process. To be eligible, families must complete an application form, which can be found at all eight elementary schools in Franklin Pierce. Applications received by the specific deadlines will be reviewed with students being accepted based on the following priorities, as space permits:

1. Spanish speaking students in the Harvard Elementary catchment area (half the available slots)

2. English speaking students in the Harvard Elementary catchment area (half the available slots)

3. If the classes have not been filled, the district will review applications from students within the district, but outside the Harvard Elementary catchment area.

4. If the classes do not fill with students from within the Franklin Pierce School District boundaries, the district will then review applications from students who live outside the Franklin Pierce School District boundaries. Students that live outside the Harvard catchment area will be required to provide their own transportation to and from school.

Once students are admitted to the program, they will have continued placement each year without having to reapply.
